Thought I’d break down The 3rd & most important verse (since the previous 2 are pretty straight forward and have been explained before), of one of the most dark, disturbing and extraordinary songs of 2011 by The Weeknd.

Anyways to breakdown the third verse, there’s two important lines from  the previous one that play a major role in this one, or basically define the whole concept of the song. They are…

“And all I wanna do is leave cause I’ve been zoning for a week, And I ain’t left this little room, trying to concentrate to breathe”

“Back from the come down, girl I been fiening, For another round…”

The Weeknd’s been fiening for his prey since his last hunt/victim/fix (The Come Down) which which was probably a week ago (Zoning for a week), he’s been anxious all week , hasn’t been able to leave the ‘room’ he’s in that he’s been ‘zoned’ (zoned : to lose control or focus) and is starting to turn (again) in this zombie, monster which kind of represents as a metaphor for the vocal manipulation throughout the song, the theme of transformation of vocals from emotion and speed that he needs his fix. Listen to the vocal speed at the beginning of the song & how it’s slow & calm but creepy when he’s trying to persuade his victim and draw her into his web of sin, and notice how fast & high pitched it gets on lines like ” no more crying… cause this piff so…” it reflects his nervousness, anxiety, tension, he wants to get things over & done with quickly, you can almost picture him like some drug addict who’s sweating, shivering with his heart pumping a 1000 beats per minute, the symptoms of a fein.

The vocal acceleration and anxiety is more evident in that 3rd verse, notice how fast he gets on that verse, as if he’s excited he’s finally got her under his spell, he’s hungry, wanting everything at this moment (since he’s been fening..), its like he’s now fully transformed into that zombie/monster at this point, there’s no turning back, he wants it all now, simultaneously … the drugs, the sex, the drink… “Roll that weed…taste that lean…take a puff…take a shot..bed so wet…”. He even threatens the girl at one point, telling her to tell the girlfriend she came with and who’s in the next room worried and screaming as if he’s a ‘monster’ to mind her own fucking business, and that her ex-man should stop calling, and if their not down with this she better keep them out before he does. “Girlfriend screaming that I’m creeping out, If they’re not down, better keep em out, Ex-man hollering, keep him out..”. The Theme of transformation is full circle at this point, the point of no return, after he’s done with her for one night, and after all the anxiety, pain and tension is released & gone notice the “normal” but high vocal range when he screams at the top of his lungs “Baby”, like it reflects the sound of satisfaction, relief, pleasure or maybe even orgasm.

Now an important part in the song is the line “that North North that up top that ovo and that xo”, This is basically what the song represents & is all about, his crew, his boys, the xo crew and the ovo crew, that OVOXO, notice how he repeats it like 4 times as if he’s emphasizing on it, to show what the point of all this is for…his boys, this test and this song is for that ovo and that xo. Another thing that should be noticed is the song’s continuation/sequel to XO/The Host, “you say that you want me but i remember who you are, girl it wasn’t long ago…” Initiation is practically some sort of revenge for the girl (on same old song) who thought he’d never go this far, now that you want me come and pass this test of darkness and fuck with my boys (I got a lot of boys & we can…), also a sequel to XO ” don’t you forget…We’ll be everything” reminding you & her not to forget his crew/boys for the next track, Initiation.

This song isn’t you’re average pop track, this is some Thriller pop shit but without the ‘cheese’ factor, yes, it’s about darkness, zombies and monsters but in a way so creepy and disturbing that it makes the song so amazing and the vision so vivid.
